THE POWER OF MONEY

Written by Singapore's youngest millionaire (26 yrs old). Almost Gandhian!!
By Adam Khoo

Some of you may already know that I travel around the region pretty
frequently, having to visit and conduct seminars at my offices in
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Suzhou (China).I am in the airport
almost every other week so I get to bump into many people who have
attended my seminars or have read my books.

Recently, someone came up to me on a plane to KL and looked rather
shocked. He asked, 'How come a millionaire like you is traveling
economy?'My reply was, 'That's why I am a millionaire.' He still
looked pretty confused.

This again confirms that greatest lie ever told about wealth (which I
wrote about in my latest book 'Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires').
Many people have been brainwashed to think that millionaires have to
wear Gucci, Hugo Boss, Rolex, and sit on first class in air travel.
This is why so many people never become rich because the moment that
earn more money, they think that it is only natural that they spend
more, putting them back to square one.

The truth is that most self-made millionaires are frugal and only
spend on what is necessary and of value. That is why they are able to
accumulate and multiply their wealth so much faster.

Over the last 7 years, I have saved about 80% of my income while today
I save only about 60% (because I have my wife, mother in law, 2 maids,
2 kids, etc. to support).Still, it is way above most people who save
10% of their income (if they are lucky).

I refuse to buy a first class ticket or to buy a $300 shirt because I
think that it is a complete waste of money. However, I happily pay
$1,300 to send my 2-year old daughter to Julia Gabriel Speech and D
ram a without thinking twice.

When I joined the YEO (Young Entrepreneur's Orgn)a few years back
(YEO) is an exclusive club open to those who are under 40 and make
over $1m a year in their own business) I discovered that those who
were self-made thought like me. Many of them with net worth well over
$5m, travelled economy class and some even drove Toyota 's and
Nissans, not Audis, Mercs, BMWs.. I noticed that it was only those who
never had to work hard to build their own wealth (there were also a
few ministers' and tycoons' sons in the club) who spent like there was
no tomorrow. Somehow, when you did not have to build everything from
scratch, you do not really value money. This is precisely the reason
why a family's wealth (no matter how much) rarely lasts past the third
generation.

Thank God my rich dad foresaw this terrible possibility and refused to
give me a cent to start my business.

Then some people ask me, 'What is the point in making so much money if
you don't enjoy it?' The thing is that I don't really find happiness
in buying branded clothes, jewellery or sitting first class. Even if
buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not
last.

Material happiness never lasts, it just give you a quick fix. After a
while you feel lousy again and have to buy the next thing which you
think will make you happy. I always think that if you need material
things to make you happy, then you live a pretty sad and unfulfilled
life.. Instead, what makes me happy is when I see my children laughing
and playing and learning so fast. What makes me happy is when I see my
companies and trainers reaching more and more people every year in so
many more countries.

What makes me really happy is when I read all the emails about how my
books and seminars have touched and inspired some one's life.

What makes me really happy is reading all your wonderful posts about
how this blog is inspiring you. This happiness makes me feel really
good for a long time, much more than what a Rolex would do for me.

I think the point I want to put across is that happiness must come
from doing your life's work (be it teaching, building homes,
Designing, trading, winning tournaments etc.) and the money that comes
is only a by-product. If you hate what you are doing and rely on the
money you earn to make you happy by buying stuff, then I think that
you are living a life of meaninglessness.

Muslims, though most neglected, little interested in using RTI: Perveen Amanullah

By Manzar Bilal, TwoCircles.net,

It was a good step by UPA government in 2005 when it introduced Right to Information (RTI) Act as it gave a ray of hope to millions of citizens seeking transparency and accountability in government. Four years down the line, have citizens got real fruits of the Act? Yes, but not fully, says Mrs Perveen Amanullah, president, Bihar Suchna Adhikar Munch, in an interview with Manzar Bilal of TwoCircles.net on the 4th anniversary of RTI.

RTI Act completed its four years. How do you think people benefited from this act during these years?

Of course, lots of people have got benefits by RTI in the country. Though I have been actively involved in social work since 2002 in Delhi, but two years ago when I came Patna, I started to work for public welfare by using RTI Act. We can show you the record of thousands of people whose cases we solved and they got their rights by the virtue of this act.

Mrs Perveen Amanullah, president, Bihar Suchna Adhikar Munch

The most famous work of us in Patna which hit the news headlines and angered the government officials was the case of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). There was corruption everywhere in the hospital. Patients had to pay for every little and big work. But when we used RTI against these corrupt doctors, nurses and workers, though after a big battle, they had to give up their activities and now situation at PMCH is normal.

There are many cases in which applicants were turned away, harassed, sometimes put behind bar and charged with criminal cases. What do you say about it?

Yes, I know that only to avoid exposure of their involvement in corruption, officials of several departments tear down applications and threat applicants. Currently, we have received 40 complaints from several parts of the state which say that people were booked with false criminal cases such as murder, attempt to murder and rape only because they used RTI. This is very dangerous trend in a democratic India. But even though we should not give in to these corrupt officers, on the contrary we should use this in more numbers and continue our efforts.

What should be done to curb this problem?

We and some other social organizations working in this field are demanding the government to take some necessary steps for effective implementation of RTI. Guilty officers should be punished, so that rights of citizens can be saved.

How much Muslims are interested in using RTI?

I am sorry to say that Muslims are not interested in using RTI. We Muslims are facing many problems in the country and we are the most backward community. Of course political parties and government officials have been neglecting us, but we should also examine that what we ourselves have done for us. This is a democratic country; we should fight for the cause of our rights being in the limitation of Indian constitution. We can solve most of the problems by using RTI. Instead of abusing others we should act for our rights.

But it seems that we are happy with our problems. Therefore, we are behind all other communities in taking benefit of RTI as we are in other fields.

What do you plan for spreading awareness about RTI?

Media can play an important role for creating awareness among all deprived people about RTI. So they should do their work as much as they can. As far as we are concerned we are holding awareness program time to time and we are always ready to attend the related programs. We are going to hold programs at district level to make awareness about RTI and also to hand over memorandums to district magistrates about people's problems.

What is your massage for the people?

I humbly request all depressed people that constitution has given them a means in the form of RTI by which they can solve their problems. They should not be prey of any street leaders who might grab a big amount of money in the name of their works. On the contrary they should use RTI without any hesitation for any kind of problem.

For making Road in village Piprahi.

Respected sir/madam,

In District Aurangabad (Bihar), Block – Goh, the Road from Raghu Bigha to Lodipur Via Piprahi (Bhurkunda Panchayat) is in shabby condition. Villagers are living in mud and water only and they have never experienced a fresh road. We can't imagine about, how they live in that position. The population of the village is not less than 4000, although it has never been recommended by any politician or official for a road. One of the main objective of Bharat Nirman Yojna is to connect all villages that have a population of 1000 with an all weather road.

Therefore, Sir, for the interest of the common people and to maintain good governance & development, your positive response is expected.

Sincerely-

Rajnish Kumar

The Pretty Lady

Once upon a time a big monk and a little monk were traveling together.
They came to the bank of a river and found the bridge was damaged.
They had to wade across the river. There was a pretty lady who was
stuck at the damaged bridge and couldn't cross the river. The big monk
offered to carry her across the river on his back. The lady accepted.
The little monk was shocked by the move of the big monk. "How can big
brother carry a lady when we are supposed to avoid all intimacy with
females?" thought the little monk. But he kept quiet. The big monk
carried the lady across the river and the small monk followed
unhappily. When they crossed the river, the big monk let the lady down
and they parted ways with her.
All along the way for several miles, the little monk was very unhappy
with the act of the big monk. He was making up all kinds of
acussations about big monk in his head. This got him madder and
madder. But he still kept quiet. And the big monk had no inclination
to explain his situation.  Finally, at a rest point many hours later,
the little monk could not stand it any further, he burst out angrily
at the big monk. "How can you claim yourself a devout monk, when you
seize the first opportunity to touch a female, especially when she is
very pretty? All your teachings to me make you a big hypocrite
The big monk looked surprised and said, "I had put down the pretty
lady at the river bank many hours ago, how come you are still carrying
her along?"
[This very old Chinese Zen story reflects the thinking of many people
today. We encounter many unpleasant things in our life, they irritate
us and they make us angry. Sometimes, they cause us a lot of hurt,
sometimes they cause us to be bitter or jealous ... But like the
little monk, we are not willing to let them go away.We keep on
carrying the baggage of the "pretty lady" with us. We let them keep on
coming back to hurt us,  make us angry, make us bitter and cause us a
lot of agony. Why? Simply because we are not willing to put down or let
go of the baggage of the "pretty lady". We should let go of the pretty
lady immediately after crossing the river, that is after the
unpleasant event is over. This will immediately remove all our
agonies. There is no need to be further hurt by the unpleasant event
after it is over.]

'Strengthen democracy through RTI Act'

Humlog Trust secretary and Bihar Right to Information Manch coordinator Parveen Amanullah on Saturday said that democracy can be
strengthened not only by casting vote once in five years, but also through Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Revival of collapsed systems and sorting out people's problems is possible through this right, she said, adding it is necessary for the common people to properly understand and use their democratic rights and responsibilities and exercise their franchise under the democratic set up. But, she said, the people's democratic responsibilities did not begin or end with casting their votes only since they are also required to nurture the democratic system in the day-to-day functioning.

She said it is responsibility of the public to ensure that doctors are present in hospitals, teachers in schools, government servants in their offices as well as the maintenance of public buildings and proper sanitation, and proper implementation of old age pension and BPL card schemes for the welfare of the people.

Tel.No.0612-2322569/2323734
Fax No.0612-2320407

Deputy Governor,
Reserve Bank of India,
Amar Building, First Floor,
Sir P. M. Road, Fort,
Mumbai - 400 001.

How to address problems with banks?

If you are having problem with any bank, initiate following steps:

1. Lodge a complaint on phone/mobile with the customer care helpline of the bank and note down complaint number, date, time and name of the person who attended your call. Details of contact numbers of customer care can be had from website of the bank.

2. If nothing transpires to your satisfaction, send a detailed written complaint, with copies of papers held by you to the branch of the bank and obtain acknowledgement or send by registered/speed post ad. Simultaneously if possible, send an email by visiting bank's website. Now most of the banks are having branch wise contact details and email IDs.

3. If no action is initiated or you are not satisfied with the reply, address the complaint to Nodal Officer at Head Office of the bank. Give details of your complaint to customer care and bank branch and their reply or no reply. Contact details are available on bank's website under customer service/care icon. Send it by registered/speed ad post and also email the same.

4. If you do not get proper reaction within a month from the bank, file a complaint with banking ombudsman of your state by visiting www.bankingombudsman.rbi.org.in. Procedure is simple, cost effective and prompt.

5. You have one year time from date of cause of action to approach banking ombudsman. If you are not satisfied with the decision of banking ombudsman, you can file appeal to Dy. Governor of RBI at its H.O. in Mumbai.

6. If you are still not satisfied, you can resort to Consumer Protection Act. You have maximum two years time from date of cause of action.

7. If you are not having necessary papers, in case of nationalized banks you can simultaneously resort to The Right to Information Act for getting the papers.

8. You need not hire any advocate for approaching nodal officer or banking ombudsman. You can communicate in English, Hindi or regional language. Even for Complaint under Consumer Protection Act there is no need of advocate, but it is advisable if amount involved is substantial.

9. If possible, you can take assistance of a serving or retired officer of the bank for properly drafting the complaint.

10. You can also refer the matter to NGOs working for consumer protection in your area and also www.core.nic.in [central govt helpline]. They also take up the matter with banks on your behalf. You can get details of NGOs by searching on yahoo/google etc.

11. When ever you personally discuss your problem with bank officer, note down his name and designation with date, place and time of discussion. Send an email giving gist of discussion. This is necessary, as the officer cannot retract later on unless he refutes your gist sent by email by return post.

Respected Regional Manager,
Madhya Bihar Grameen Bank,
Aurangabad (Bihar)

According to RTI Rule it is must to display the name, designation and contact addresses of PIO and Appellate authorities at all public sector offices and Bank Branches. But in Aurangabad district no one MBGB Branches has displayed the same, even after four years. In first appearance it is violation of RTI Rule. Although i have made a complaint to SIC in this regard earlier with no resolution till date. Please look into this matter and do the needful.
